Spectacles Recycling – Where do they go?
Have you ever wondered what happens to your used spectacles that you kindly donate to HH Lions at various opticians around Haywards Heath?
Your unwanted and used spectacles are collected by HH Lions and sent to a recycling centre located and run by Chichester Lions Club at Apuldram, near Chichester.
The centre has been collecting recycled Spectacles for almost 35 years and during this times, hundreds of thousands of spectacles, contact lenses and frames, originally destined for the rubbish heap, have been sorted, graded and eventually sent overseas to places such as Cameroon, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Sri Lanka, India, Zanzibar, Jamaica, Bolivia and Brazil, to name but a few places that have benefitted from your donations.
Once they arrive at the centre, your Spectacles are processed by Lions members and volunteers to select the items that are suitable for recycling and to sort them in preparation for onward transmission to Medico France in Le Havre. Medico France have the necessary equipment to clean and grade the spectacles ready for use in eye camps in Africa, India and Eastern Europe.
Over the years, Lions have developed contacts with individuals and charities based in the UK who are carrying out eye-camp projects overseas and who are able to use the spectacles that you donate and that Lions are recycling and supplying to them.
Every year Lions send over 300,000 pairs of spectacles to Medico France. Through Chichester, the UK Lions clubs provide more than 50% of the spectacles processed by Medico France – more than any other national group including France itself… with your help.
HH Lions would like to thank all those local opticians who are taking part in this essential UK wide recycling project, providing much need spectacles to those in need around the world. If you would like to know more about Spectacles recycling or about what Lions do in your area, please contact HH Lions on 0845 8335807 or go to the HH Lions website at www.haywardsheathlionsclub.org.uk
