Haywards Heath Lions Club is a voluntary service organisation and is part of Lions Clubs International, the largest service organisation in the world. The Haywards Heath club was chartered in 1962 and is open to both men and women of all ages. Currently there are around 20 members from all walks of life. The common thread is that we are caring individuals giving some of our spare free time to serving the local community, raising funds to help others in need and enjoying what we do in the company of like-minded friends. Our members are drawn from Haywards Heath and surrounding areas and we extend our services into the villages of Cuckfield, Lindfield, Ardingly, Horsted Keynes and Scaynes Hill.

We hold many fund-raising events throughout our calendar year that includes attendances at village fetes, holding quizzes and promoting and running our main fund raising events – the annual Swimarathon held on Good Friday at The Dolphin Centre – this year we helped raise nearly £20k for local good causes and our annual Father Christmas Carol Appeal which this year raised over £5k. As we are a not for profit organisation, all monies we raise go back into the community in some way, either helping individuals, families or local small charities and clubs e.g. Seahorses Swimming Club or April Club amongst others. This year, on the advice of local health care services, monies raised through the Christmas Carol Appeal allowed us to purchase Sainsbury’s vouchers to help provide some Christmas cheer to 38 local needy families with a total of 78 children.

We meet twice a month, on the first Monday of each month at 8pm at St Francis Social Club, Haywards Heath (approximately 1/2 mile from Haywards Heath town centre) where club members can have their say about what the Club is doing.

The second meeting, on the third Monday of the month, is a social evening which usually involves a meal, sometimes with a guest speaker or a visit to an interesting venue.

The complete cost of running the club is covered by members’ subscriptions which are kept as low as possible. In the case of the Haywards Heath club, the current year – 12-month period July/June – the annual cost of membership is £72, paid in two half yearly amounts. Less than £1.50 a week.
